Overview
This project challenged me to design and construct a skirt solely from recycled materials, using only book paper and staples to bring the concept to life. Emphasizing design aspects like shape and shadow, I carefully layered and folded the paper to create depth and movement, making the structure feel dynamic despite the unconventional materials. The result was a visually striking, eco-friendly fashion piece that not only showcased the possibilities of sustainable design but also highlighted the elegance and adaptability of repurposed materials.
To commence my project, I procured my materials—textbook paper and staples—from the eco-conscious repository situated behind the esteemed campus library. Sourcing resources imbued with a history of reuse was imperative, as it encapsulated a profound ethos of sustainability and abundance. This intentional choice not only honored the environment but also set the tone for a creative endeavor rooted in the principles of responsible consumption and artistic integrity.
Next, I meticulously curated the pages of the textbooks, discerningly selecting those that resonated with my artistic vision. Preserving the inherent integrity of each sheet was paramount, as it imbued my work with an authentic essence, honoring the timeless narratives encapsulated within the fibers of the paper. As I examined the text, I found inspiration in the words and illustrations, allowing them to guide my design choices and deepen the connection between the material and the finished garment.
After carefully selecting the pages, I shaped each one into an elegant 'V' configuration to create the pleats for the skirt. My goal was to add tactile richness, contrasting the intricate folds with the sleek simplicity of a classic 'A-line mini' silhouette. By using staples to unite these elements, I crafted a cohesive piece that celebrated both fashion and literature. This journey deepened my appreciation for the nuances of paper and design, revealing a realm where beauty and knowledge seamlessly intertwine and invite exploration beyond conventional boundaries.
